- Sand the piece well with 220 grit sandpaper. Make sure to sand with the grain.
- Brush the piece off to remove the sanding dust.
- Apply a thin coat of paint with a sponge brush.
- Paint will dry in 2-6 hours, depending on air temperature.
- Apply a second coat of paint the same way.
- It will take a minimum of 2-3 coats of paint to create a opaque finish that hides the wood grain. If you are applying more then 2 coats, sand lightly between coats with 400 grit sandpaper.
- After the final coat of paint has dried, apply a coat of clear finish with sponge brush. Only apply enough to provide a wet film on the piece, do Not over-brush.
- The clear finish will take between 2-4 hours to dry, depending on the temperature.
- Apply a second coat of clear finish directly over the first coat.
- After the second coat has dried, smooth the piece with 400 grit sandpaper and apply another coat
- Continue repeat the last step until the piece has developed your preferred luster (usually 4-6 coats.)
- After the final coat of clear finish is dry, sand lightly with 400 grit sandpaper like before, then use a polish such as Howard's Orange Oil to remove the dust.
